I went ahead and added Dad to the draft. I couldn’t resist the temptation to make him a potential super man. I managed to resist cranking all of his current numbers up, leaving a most of the ridiculous stuff in his potential values. I did have to edit the draft order, as I ended up 13th.
Missing out on drafting Darryl Strawberry hurts. It’s weird to think of 80’s Mets without him, but should definitely be worth it.
Other potentiall interesting transactions:
September 22nd: Ed Kranepool retires (out of AAA). As another iconic Met, I’m sad, but it was definitely time.
October 21st: Signed CF Tito Landrum to a minor league extension, as he was up to be a FA.
October 23rd: Signed RF Gil Flores to a minor league contract extension.
November 7th: 2B Doug Flynn, C Butch Wynegar, SP Kevin Kobel, 1B/OF Lee Mazzilli, RP Dale Murray, RF Joel Youngblood, and SP Pat Zachry all signed to 1 year contract’s via arbitration.
November 23rd: 1B Keith Hernandez signs an 8 year contract worth $7,482,000. He’s getting paid a bit early this way, and the Mets get to enjoy his presence a bit earlier. I was surprised that he signed my first offer.
December 5th: Robin Yount sign’s a 4 year contract worth $3,342,800. I had to increase my offer a couple of times, and drop my development budget down to find the cash, but it worked out just barely. This of course meant to no more FA signing’s, but between Hernandez and Young meant the Mets had now increased my WAR 4th overall in the off season. The loss of another draft pick wasn’t great, but worth it I think. I’ll keep Ozzie Smith at SS, and move Yount to second base.
December 15th: Draft time! I picked up my dad with the first pick. Thanks to the White Sox snagging Stearns I had a supplemental first round pick, which was used in 3B Kelly Gruber. I followed this pick’s up with SP Dennis Rasmussen, CF Cecil Espy, and 1B Mike Laga. Nothing very exciting, maybe the development engine RNGesus will shine down on me and one of them will exceed expectations.
December 20th: My dad sign’s a minor league contract, with a whopping $490,000 bonus.
