NL ROTY: LF Leon Durham. At 22 years of age, he played in 135 games, collecting 149 hits, 30 home runs, 104 RBI’s, and 100 runs scored. He slashed .312/.397/.569, and had a league leading OPS of .967, with a WAR of 4.5.
MOTY awards went to the Angels Jim Fregosi and the reds John McNamara.
AL Cy Young: The Yankees Ron Guidry narrowly beat out the Angels Nolan Ryan, 14 votes to 12, for the Cy Young award. He pitched 279.1 innings across 35 starts, winning 16 times and losing 13. He put up 235 K’s, and kept opposing batters to a .200 average.
NL Cy Young: J R Richard of the Astros nearly unanimously took the award (Tom Seaver of the Reds picked up 1 first place vote). Richard started 35 times, winning 20 games and losing 7. He staye in for 279.1 innings across those starts, striking out batters 277 times and coming out with a ridiculous 1.77 ERA.
AL MVP: Boston Red Sox LF Jim Rice won the award at the age of 26. He was given 16 1st place votes, vs 10 for runner-up George Brett of the Royals. Rice played 155 games, knocking out 219 hits, 38 doubles, 7 triples, and an impressive 45 home runs. He add 157 RBIs and 126 runs to those numbers. He lead the AL in home runs, RBIs, and slugging. Rice slashed for .347/.392/.642, and put up a WAR of 7.9
NL MVP: 30 year old LF George Foster of the Cincinnati Reds took the NL MVP for 1979. He was given 22 votes, vs 4 for runner up SP J R Richard. Foster lead the NL in runs scored (123), home runs (50), slugging (.584) and WAR (7.5). He slashed .301/.381/.584
